Removing background on picture

Hi everyone ! here another tutorial just for you !

So firstly you need a picture

i want to explain something, the background is not important, the only fact you need to know is : the background CAN'T be the same color of the element (on the edge) you want to extract from the picture or it's gonna be hard to trace and the job gonna look weird...

Here is my picture on a white background (sorry, the size is small... :P)

nothing easy

so open the picture in photoshop (im using CS3)

Now we gonna use a fantastic plug in (already) in photoshop, very helpful

Filters / Extract
OR
PC - CTRL + ALT + X
MAC - CMD + ALT + X

now im gonna explain how the tool works !

The green tool (pencils):

Set it to the size : 11

With this tool you need to trace a green line on the edge between the background and the element you want to extract and you can see i just pass on the edge quickly it's not really important to take long time to trace the edge... just trace it with a margin inside and outside

Example here

REALLY IMPORTANT : You need to close the green line or its not gonna work.

TIPS :
- Hold CTRL or CMD (for mac user) when you trace the line it's a magnet trace.
- Hold ALT for fast switch to the erase tool

when you have finish to trace the edge, Select

the blue tools (Fill tool):

Just fill the element you want to extract

TROUBLE : if when you fill your element, (ALL) your picture become blue it's because your green line is not close properly.

its supposed to look like this...

Example here

Now press Preview and if you like that press OK

now you can set a new background !!! (sorry this what i found on google :P)

Fact : This tool is awesome but is not perfect so sometime you need to rebuild some part with the stamp tool ("S" key) or erase other one...

Enjoy !

Interesting fact :

This tool work really well and i want to explain how he work

When you trace the green line, it's gonna be the selection area and when you fill the element (in blue) Photoshop gonna look every color inside the element and go back in the green line and discard every colors they didn't match with the element colors (with a smoothing range) and every thing outside the green line is discarded.
