try many things, make a lot of tutorials, read, AND Specialize you in something !

Me im specialize in photos retouching and calibrating, but you can be a senior designer, 2d artist (textures), Web designer, magazine designer...
but first you need to know what you wanna do, and after, do it
create a good portfolio, make a lot of good work, look all the stuff of others designer on the web, try to make better and grow up your skills.
And for the web industry, you need to know, html, Css base skills
after, find great web deisgn and take a screen shot, build you a folder, and drop all cool web design in this folder... (continue to do that all the time when you go on a cool web site)
after, open photoshop, and try to do a web design for you, for fun
use the folder with screenshot for ideas !
