How do make a gradient on adobe photoshop cs?

I would like to know how do I under layey without covering the image with the gradient color picked. To make things a little easier, I'm using this on MAC.

You will need to create a layer and select gradient tool Then you should select options for gradient. Afterward, you need to put the image on top of gradient, and then you should see gradient.

All you need to do is create a layer, aside from the background. You will then press ctrl+layer1 on the layers panel, which selects the oval.

First you should select the area you wanna use it on. Make sure you choose two colors in the two big squares. Then click on the gradient tool and click to drag the direction you want it to go.
