using photoshop as photo reference for portrait drawing

Are there any tutorials that would help me set up a photo in photoshop so I could use it as reference when drawing a pencil portrait. Example defining shadows highlights and tonal shifts...proportion measurements. combinings two photos with one to create a drawing that did not exist as a photo alone.
I hope there is such a thing, I do use it to a degree..but I figure there must be a way to use it better..than zoomong in on features..thanks for any help in advance..great site here.
